Objectives
This proposal is divided into two sections, one for each of the major topics.
Section 1 Developing treatments for Polydora spp. infestation to improve Hawaii’s oyster farming efficiency, prevent spread and protect Hawaii’s reputation as a seed supplier.
1. Determine the minimum non-lethal (to oysters) dosage and tissue retention of Ivermectin to treat Polydora infection and as a research tool, thus laying the foundation for future approval as an Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD).
2. Assess the vulnerability of two species of oyster spat (em>Crassostrea gigas and C. virginica) to initial Polydora spp. infestation in the laboratory and on the farm.
3. Determine whether prophylactic treatment of hatchery-produced spat reduces re-infestation once spat are stocked on farms.
4. Test extracts from Hawaiian macroalgal species with probable vermifuge/vermicide properties based on studies of closely related species for use with Polydora spp.
Section 2 Testing the efficacy of an oyster disease sentinel program to assure Hawaii’s shellfish biosecurity.
5. Pilot an oyster sentinel program to assess feasibility, logistics and costs of establishing a longer-term program to detect molluscan diseases.
